Since WHOOP® first launched, one of the most common complaints from users has been the price of replacement bands. This has been a conversation for years, especially on Reddit and in reviews. A lot of people assumed there would be more affordable options, just like there are with Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Garmin. With those platforms, third-party bands are a normal and expected part of the user experience.
We saw the feedback and decided to offer something simple: a third-party option for WHOOP® users who wanted more flexibility. Over a year ago, WHOOP® contacted us and asked us to stop selling our bands. We responded and asked them to provide their patent so we could evaluate the request. We didn’t hear back for many months. Then, after their patent was officially granted and some more time had passed, they reached back out.
At that point, we had just restocked. We agreed to sell through the inventory we had and then shut things down. Several months later, our Amazon listing was taken down for patent infringement. This happened well after our last communication with WHOOP®, while we were still operating under the impression that we were allowed to finish selling what remained.
In the meantime, more and more third-party WHOOP® bands began showing up. Some came from large overseas sellers and others from direct-to-consumer brands. A few were even selling products with added parts and features that were clearly meant to mimic WHOOP®'s design. We reached out to some of these brands directly and asked if WHOOP® had contacted them. Every single one said no. This was surprising, especially since WHOOP® had told us they were reaching out to sellers as they became aware of them.
It’s disappointing to see this kind of inconsistency. Every major wearable brand supports an ecosystem of third-party accessories, and that has always benefited the customer. It gives people choice, lowers prices, and creates a sense of community around the product. WHOOP® is the exception to that. Their decision not only impacts small businesses like ours but also limits the freedom of their customers.
We’re proud of what we created and thankful for the support we’ve received. All we’re asking is for WHOOP® to do what most other companies in this space already do: allow third-party bands and give users the freedom to customize their devices the way they want to.
